DID NOT WORK CONTEST LONG DUE TO OTHER DISTRACTIONS THIS WEEKEND. DID NOT HEAR A GREAT NUMBER OF STATIONS HERE. I AM ASSUMING BAND WASN'T THAT GOOD. LOOK FORWARD TO DOING THIS AGAIN.

73, SANDY W5TVW

Hi,
My name is John VE7NI and I had really hoped to make a few contacts today from British Columbia but propagation just didn't exist!  I heard one W8 station but couldn't get his complete call or exchange.

Other years I have entered and made a few contacts.  This year, my entry score is "0" but that is OK.

This year I set up as a portable station using battery power, my Ten Tec Argonaut 5 running 5 watts (from BC) and a sloping dipole antenna.  It was an absolutely beautiful day to be sitting under a shade tree with a gentle breeze blowing and the temperature about 27C.

I had my eyes closed, calling "CQ CGR" and as the breeze blew across my face, I had a flashback to a summer at home, as a kid, when my twin brother, cousin and I were sitting under the shade of a big walnut tree in our back yard.  I had my eyes closed and a gentle breeze was blowing across my face.  We kept asking each other, "What do you want to do?" and we must have stayed under that shade tree for almost two hours.  (I don't remember making any QRP QSO's that day either hi hi)

The moral of the story..... I had long forgotten that beautiful, but important, memory from my childhood.  Why it came back today I may never know.  In any case, thanks to the contest today, it turned out to be a great day for me!
73, John VE7NI

P.S. I hope for better band conditions for the contest this coming winter.

Here's how we announced the 'test:

It was 1859 before CW.  It was 1859 before spark.  It was 1859 before our time was taken away with "reality" television, DVD's, cell phones, and email.  It was 1859 before daylight saving time.  Take a moment to relax and enjoy the "real" world.  This mid-summer event might just build your WAS, DXCC, and provide you with some operating pleasure. Be a part of history!  Are you certified at 65 WPM?  Good for you.  Are you happy at 8 WPM?  That is just fine too.  Just get on and work someone!
